On March 1, 2012 at 5 pm Oksana Kozlovskaya, Speaker of the Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast held the award ceremony to honor the laureates of the Duma Award for Young Scientists and Young Hopefuls.

In 2011, 215 applications were submitted to the Oblast Duma. At the January session, the Duma deputies summarized the results of the contest and announced the names of 39 winners in four categories: Young Hopefuls, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Technical Sciences.

By tradition, the envelopes were opened and the names of the winners announced on the stage of the International Cultural Center of the Tomsk Polytechnic University. This year, the deputies added 4 awards to the existing 35: two in the Young Scientists category and two in the Young Hopefuls category.

Starting from 2012, the amount of the award for young scientists is 30,000 rubles, for students 20,000 rubles and for young hopefuls 10,000 rubles.

Traditionally, the most populated category of the contest is Young Hopefuls. The deputies pointed out that the prestige of the Duma Award is growing year over year and the number of young people aspiring to the Duma Award is steadily increasing.

Over the last nine years many school, university, and post-graduate students started their careers with this contest. Many laureates have continued their scientific studies and successfully defend their theses in various fields of knowledge. Owing to these accomplishments and examples of success, Tomsk enjoys special attention in Russia and abroad.

Many deputies of the Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast of the 5th convocation spoke of that from the stage and emphasized that the task of the government is not only to provide opportunities for the young to get high-quality modern education, but also help each of them to develop and gain public recognition of their talents.

“Over the nine years the contest proved itself as a “social elevator” for the laureates of the Duma Award,” Oksana Kozlovskaya says. “Today, many stories of success have successfully continued.”

One of the laureates of the 2009 contest, Aleksei Knyazev (currently, laboratory chief at the Tomsk State University) in February 2010 became one of the four laureates of the 2009 Russian Federation President’s Prize in Science and Innovations for Young Scientists for his contribution to the development of Russian science and innovation activity related to the development and industrial implementation of a technology for the production of a strategic chemical substance – glyoxal. The same year he was awarded a special prize of the World Intellectual Property Organization as Best Young Inventor for developing the production of glyoxal in Russia. Stanislav Shidlovsky became a laureate of the 2009 youth award of the Russian Union of Scientific and Engineering Public Organizations in Science and Technology “Hope of Russia”; etc. Many laureates have continued their scientific studies and successfully defend their theses in various fields of knowledge. This list of names and achievements is very long. Owing to such “stars” and such examples of success, Tomsk Oblast today enjoys special attention in Siberia, Russia, and even abroad.

“I am sure that this tradition of identifying and encouraging the most talented young representatives of science, education, and innovative business will continue to exist and will be maintained by the deputies of the Legislative Duma of Tomsk Oblast. People are our most precious treasure and a key prerequisite for sustained economic development!”
